Aspiring to be one of the world’s best universities, UBC will prepare students to become exceptional global citizens, promote the values of a civil and sustainable society, and conduct outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada, and the world.
The University of British Columbia (UBC), founded in 1915, is the third largest university in Canada. The Vancouver campus occupies a 400-hectare area bordered on three sides by forest, mountains, and ocean. UBC is one of the world's great public universities and has consistently been rated among the top 40 institutes in the world. It is home to more than 43,000 undergraduate, graduate and international students, and has an economic impact of $6 billion on the local economy. UBC is top in Canada for filing patents and in the top ten in North America for spin-off companies, making it a North American leader in research and knowledge dissemination. Located on Canada's spectacular Pacific coast, the University is situated in Vancouver, Canada's third largest city, which has long been considered one of the world's most beautiful and livable cities.
A publicly supported comprehensive university comprising twelve faculties, twelve schools, almost 70 centres and institutes, four affiliated teaching hospitals and TRIUMF (Canada's National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics), UBC employs over 2000 full-time and an equal number of part-time instructional staff. UBC is a global centre of research and learning with state-of-the-art facilities, offering a wide range of professional programs.
A small yet vibrant downtown campus, UBC Robson Square, offers stimulating arts and humanities courses, leading-edge technology programs, live performances, international events, results-driven management development programs, and public forums. In September 2005, UBC opened a second major campus, UBC Okanagan, in the Southern Interior region of British Columbia. Situated near downtown Kelowna, UBC Okanagan features small classes, student-centred learning, interdisciplinary and integrated programs and e-learning opportunities.
UBC offers resources for every academic and extracurricular interest. UBC's library is the third largest research library in Canada, with over 8 million items and 21 branches. The University is also home to the Museum of Anthropology (Canada's largest teaching museum), one of the world's largest sub-atomic particle accelerators, a superb concert hall, a contemporary art gallery, botanical gardens, even a working model farm.
UBC's scope continues to extend internationally. Building on its historical ties, its commitment to the Asia Pacific region, and its focus on study and research related to Asia, UBC proudly opened the Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO) in May 2005. Located in the Central District of Hong Kong, the APRO is mandated to serve the entire Asia Pacific region.
