National Taiwan University is the longest continuing and also the most complete and comprehensive university in Taiwan. During the past eight plus years, NTU has provided the leadership and expertise to guide Taiwan’s overall development. During the same period, NTU herself has evolved and developed along with Taiwan.
As an institution, NTU is devoted to providing an excellent education, to undertaking advanced research, and to improving social conditions in Taiwan. First, in pursuit of providing an excellent education, we recognize the eternal value of personal freedom and independent thinking, and so we firmly resist external interference in order to preserve our academic freedom. We respect the freedom of instruction, research and discussion among faculty and students alike. Second, our pursuit of truth embraces exploring the future of human kind and improving society, as well as revealing truths about the universe. Third, in providing an all-around education, we are concerned to nurture at once professional knowledge and personal improvement. Hence, we teach students the classics, East and West, and promote their respect for life and their sense of benevolence toward other people; in that way, we strive to broaden their experience, deepen their sense of sympathy and cultivate their better nature.
